An off-road vehicle carrying four riders plunged off a dirt road into a canyon, California rescuers say.

Rescuers with San Bernardino County Fire Protection District responded to a call about the crash near Lytle Creek just before 5 p.m., Sunday, April 20, the agency said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Four people were riding in an all-terrain vehicle on a dirt road when it plugged 30 to 40 feet down a canyon, leaving one rider injured , according to rescuers.

Fire district officials said they hiked down to the crash site and met with rescuers from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department who “had been lowered to the scene.”

Rescuers medically assessed the injured man, who was outside the crashed vehicle, and prepped him to be hoisted from the area by helicopter, the department said.

A video shared by the fire district shows three rescuers waiting beside the crashed vehicle with the man prepped in rescue equipment.

Rescuers secure the man using a hook, then the helicopter crew slowly reels the man up, the video shows.

The helicopter crew flew the man to a nearby trauma center, rescuers said.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Lytle Creek is about a 60-mile drive northeast from Los Angeles.
